Happy Ukrainian, Russian and Eastern Christmas!

January 6, 2013

Growing up in northern Alberta, Canada, I had many Ukrainian friends and some cousins who celebrated Christmas on January seventh. They all thought they had the greatest deal. Many of them did their shopping after ‘our’ Christmas and enjoyed all the ‘after Boxing Day’ sales. When we lived in British Columbia, Seattle area and then Utah, we got to know some lovely Russians. I also currently have a brother living in Russia. Thus, I have a soft spot for Eastern Orthodox Christmas, and I enjoy celebrating it a little myself. What better excuse to keep the spirit of Christmas going for another week beyond New Years?! Suddenly, I am craving some of the glorious Christmas foods that all the Ukrainian mothers I used to know made once upon a time… the fabulous braided bread especially calls to me from long ago and far away.
